Holocaust Day of Remembrance - by CK Gabler

On Holocaust Remembrance Day, Christ Church Universal (CCU) stands in solidarity with the Jewish community and remembers and reflects on the millions of precious lives lost due to anti-Semitism and hate.

Thursday, April 8, 2021, is Yom HaShoah or Holocaust Remembrance Day in the United States. It is on this day that people throughout our nation stand together with Jewish people worldwide commemorating the estimated six million Jews, and others who were victims of the heinous, murderous acts of the Nazis. Yom HaShoah honors the Holocaust survivors and the American soldiers who liberated victims.

“Holocaust,” is a Greek word for “holos” (whole) and “kaustos” (burned) and was originally used to describe a sacrificial offering burned on an altar. But in 1945, the term took on a new definition; the ideological and systematic state-sponsored persecution and mass murder of millions of European Jews, in addition to millions of others which included Romani people, those who were intellectually disabled, those who protested and disagreed with the Nazi regime, and homosexuals. The Holocaust, Hitler’s “final Solution,” was carried out under the cover of World War II, through concentration camps throughout Poland, serving as massive killing centers. An estimated six million Jews and five million others were persecuted and murdered for racial, political, ideological and behavior reasons: with children making up one million of those who were killed.

Our heavenly Father’s heart aches when we stand by in silence and complacency while marginalized individuals are oppressed. In Deuteronomy 32:4 the Bible says, “The Rock, His work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” In Psalm 89:14 it says, “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you.” We are also reminded that Jesus himself was Jewish, born to Mary, wife of Joseph (Matthew 1:1-25 & Luke 2:1-21), and was crucified for our sins (John 19:1-42).

Please join CCU as we stand in unity and in support of the Jewish community as we honor those who have suffered at the hands of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism, and hate. May God be with you, strengthen you, and heal you.

Isaiah 17:17

learn to do good; seek justice, correct oppression; bring justice to the fatherless, plead the widow's cause.

Psalm 82:3

Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute.
