The world watched in anguish as the high-profile trial of former Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin unraveled, revealing details of the murder of George Floyd. Dozens of witness testimony and hours of video footage opened and reopened painful wounds. We know that our heavenly Father watched as Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck as he struggled to say his final words before his death, “Oh my god. I can’t believe this. I can’t believe this. Mama, I love you.... Tell my kids I love them. I’m dead.” After what must have felt like the longest nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds in history, George Floyd was murdered by Chauvin, a man who swore under oath to protect and serve the public. Floyd was executed in a way only deserving of a criminal.

Twelve jurors, with the weight of the world on their shoulders, deliberated for four hours. Four black, two multiracial, and six white jurors analyzed the case knowing their final decision would determine justice George Floyd, the fate of Chauvin, and the state of our hurting nation. Today, April 20, 2021, this jury found Chauvin guilty on all three counts. Justice for George Floyd was indeed served.

God was there when his son Jesus was murdered, too. God painfully watched his son Jesus brutally beaten and hung on a cross to innocently die, also executed in a way only deserving of a criminal. Luke 23:46 says that Jesus’ last words before he took his last breath were, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Jesus took on our sins so that justice could be served. John 3:16. Justice = Just as if I never sinned.

Christ Church Universal (CCU) denounces racism and police brutality against our black and brown community. We support the Black Lives Matter movement and stand in solidarity with our BIPOC community in calling out hate crimes and white supremacy. We believe that racism is sin, and we call for Christians and our faith community everywhere to unite with us in our continued stand for justice. May today’s verdict bring you peace knowing that justice has been served, and may it bring you the hope that we as humankind are working toward doing and being better every day.

Proverbs 6: 16-17

There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him:
haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,

Proverbs 21:15

When justice is done, it brings joy to the righteous but terror to evildoers.

John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
